New Public Chapter Prevents Reduction of Some Items in Mayor’s Budget

News Date

Public Chapter 933, effective May 6, 2024, enacts a new section in Title 5, Chapter 9, Part 4, to prohibit the county legislative body from reducing the mayor’s budget for certain items below the amount budgeted for those items in the previous fiscal year unless the mayor approves the reduction.

The budgetary items covered by the new law are:

  • Salaries and benefits for personnel in the mayor’s office
  • Office supplies
  • Communication expenses
  • Postal charges
  • Duplication services
  • Professional development training
  • Membership dues and fees

It is important to note that this new law does not cover budgetary amounts related to other functions or departments that may be operated by or supervised out of the mayor’s office, such as solid waste.
